Papers, 1979-1988, bulk 1985-1987 [manuscript].

The collection consists chiefly of letters to Nan Cooke Carpenter, thanking her for gifts of books by her sister, Margaret Haley Carpenter, or extending sympathy for the latter's death in May 1985. A few discuss efforts to establish a Margaret Haley Carpenter Prize in Poetry and many mention other memorial donations in her name, chiefly to humane societies. Correspondents include Jean Burden, William A. Drake, Francis J. Flick, George Cardinal LeGros, Sarah Lockwood, Virginia Moseley, Robert Manson Myers, John Nixon, Jr., Eleanor Ruggles O'Leary, Ruby Altizer Roberts, Glenn Ruihley, and Dorothy Van Doren.
